Yesterday saw the launch of S[edition] an on online store for "digital art." Users are able to buy digital works from artists like Tracy Emin, Damien Hirst and Isaac Julien which they can then use as screen savers and desktop backgrounds for PCs and mobile devices.
Opinion from the art world seems divided on this new sales channel for artists, but you can't fault the nice execution of the site, with good social media integration.
No, my interest is in the additional hot air this initiative will generate.
Back in 2005, webbactivemedia were campaigning for people to switch from using screen savers to the power off mode of their computer screens. Screen savers are completely obsolete with modern flat screen displays that do not suffer from the problems of "burn in" that the savers were designed to combat.
So having a screen powered up when you are away from it, is simply a waste of electricity. Small watts if it's just you, but what if your whole organisation uses screen savers? How much power and carbon emmisions can be saved?
We can answer these questions with our handy little calculator. I think you'll be surprised with the results.
So, by all means invest in digital art, but don't use it as a screen saver!

I've been a client since 2000 and have found webbactivemedia to be easy to work and discuss new ideas with. I'm non-computer literate, but he makes me feel comfortable with the web-based world and gives me excellent advice. I'd recommend webbactivemedia to anyone who wants more out of their website.
