I've talked a fair bit about the rise of QR codes in 2012 and how they can be useful for marketing your products and services.
But how do you create them? Simple - you can make them right here with our QR-code-a-tron.
I am an author! Well, I've co-authored a book, "Twitter for charities, non profits and the voluntary sector."
Well, I wrote some bits - on how webbactivemedia used Twitter to capture Dragon (Duncan Bannatyne) as a patron for the Forces Children's Trust, the maths behind social networks (thanks to the genius of Tom Alcott) and some bits on running competitions on Twitter and social media monitoring.
All the rest is down to the ridiculously talented Jim Byrne. The book launches on the 1st March, but you can download a sample chapter now and even get a free copy if you tell your friends about it :) Do have a read and tell me what you think! http://launch.tw3rd.com/
Interesting to see today that the Advertising Standards Authority have declared that Trip Advisor can no longer claim that reviews on their site are from "real travellers" such is the level of "gaming" of their review process by businesses wanting to boost their ratings, or downplay a client. Of course this is just one reason you should not trust reviews.

I'm a long term fan of addthis.com. We've been using their easy to implement sharing buttons for many years. They continue to innovate and add useful features that make any site's content easily sharable, and now provide really useful metrics on how and where content is shared. Here is their view on content sharing in 2011 agregated from a statistically valid 1.2 billion users!
It's time to look forward to the New Year and predict some trends that will be important for on-line businesses in 2012.
I'll cut to the chase...
Short answer...maybe. I know a lot of people will be rushing headlong to set up a Google+ page for business, but I'd suggest you stop and think first.
Yesterday saw the launch of S[edition] an on online store for "digital art." Users are able to buy digital works from artists like Tracy Emin, Damien Hirst and Isaac Julien which they can then use as screen savers and desktop backgrounds for PCs and mobile devices.
Opinion from the art world seems divided on this new sales channel for artists, but you can't fault the nice execution of the site, with good social media integration.
No, my interest is in the additional hot air this initiative will generate.
The web is evolving fast. A few years ago you were lucky to be able to have some text and images on a page. Try this amazing demo of what can now be achieved in a web browser, as you control your own Formula 1 car.
There has been huge increase in the hacking of web sites. A few years ago, this would have been mainly the preserve of the script kiddie - young people who were googling for hacking tips and tools, and using then on random web sites for "fun." However, there is increasing evidence and concern over a definite move to more organised and nefarious goals. Hacking is increasingly used for criminal aims and there are also serious concerns about it's use as a threat to national security.
This is a great summary of the state of play in social media worldwide in 2011.
Many people talk about social networks without actually understanding what they are. Bear with us as we delve into the maths of networks, and you’ll have a better understanding of why and how you can use them to your advantage. Social networks are a special type of network as defined by mathematicians - a “small world” network, made so by the existence of random connections.

I was interested in the recent new coverage of Toni Paul's attempts to get negative and damaging comments removed from Google's review system. I think this really highlights the need for all business owners and organisations to build a solid digital monitoring and marketing strategy.
It needn't be expensive or time consuming but means that you'll have a far greater degree of control over how people get information about your organisation online.

One of the most common concerns we hear from organisations about using social networking is the fear of negative comments or criticism. Our reply is this:
I'm sad to see the end of Google Labs, the one stop shop to try some of Google's bleeding edge innovations. Check in and try some of the fun things they've been cooking up before they dissappear! Here are some of my favourite Lab experiments.
We all know that for ecommerce, a good Google ranking is very important. However, Google now consists of various "flavours" of search - you have the main listings, news, images, video and shopping. So how can you get your products in the Shopping listings?
It was a good start to what turned out to be a great day at the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) Annual Volunteer Conference. Checking my email in a quiet corner of the Edinburgh International Conference centre, a familar looking blonde asked if she could take a seat. A quick glance confirmed it to be Michelle Mone, the millionaire entrepereur and marketer behind the Ultimo Bra range.
I've been a client since 2000 and have found webbactivemedia to be easy to work and discuss new ideas with. I'm non-computer literate, but he makes me feel comfortable with the web-based world and gives me excellent advice. I'd recommend webbactivemedia to anyone who wants more out of their website.
